Dr. Aaron Haines will start with a talk on bat research being conducted at Millersville University, then take you into the field to survey for bats on Homefields property.
The goal of this class is to review how to use remote acoustic recording devices to record bat vocalizations. Remote acoustic survey efforts are a cost-effective way to survey for rare bats in Pennsylvania. We will end the talk with a bat/bird hike and use equipment to identify bat species in active flight.
$15 per person or $30 per family—Buy one ticket for you, or two for your fam. The class is limited to 12 attendees. While this event is family-friendly, it is not recommended for children under age 7.
Bats provide ecosystem services to human societies such as being indicators of ecosystem health and providing control over problem insect species. In the state of Pennsylvania, there are 7 species of bats that are of conservation concern, with 3 species listed as endangered and 2 protected under the Endangered Species Act.
